Why showers grow mold
A shower is a warm, wet room that gets used every day. Soap film and skin cells feed mold. Grout, caulk and shower curtains stay damp. If the bathroom fan is weak or the door stays closed, the moisture hangs in the air.
That makes the shower the easiest place in the house to grow mold and the easiest place to clean it, if you catch it early.
Cleaning mold in a shower, step by step
Ventilate
Run the fan and open a window or door.
Protect yourself
Wear gloves and eye protection, and an N-95 mask for larger patches.
Scrub grout and caulk
Use detergent and water with a stiff brush on grout. Replace caulk that is black, peeling or stained.
Rinse well
Remove residue with clean water.
Dry everything
Wipe down the walls and run the fan for at least 30 minutes.
Wash or replace the curtain
Fabric curtains can be washed. Plastic ones that stay moldy should be replaced.
Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products. Take any health concern to your physician.
Grout and caulk: the repeat offenders
Grout is porous and holds water. Caulk fails at the joints where tile meets tub, and mold grows behind it where you cannot see. If cleaning does not remove the stain, the mold is probably inside the caulk or the grout line.
Remove the old caulk, clean the joint, let it dry fully and re-caulk with a mildew-resistant product. Reseal grout once a year to slow water absorption.

When shower mold means a leak
Cleaning solves surface mold. It does not solve a leak. Warning signs include mold that returns within weeks, stains on the ceiling below the bathroom, soft or spongy walls or floors around the shower, loose tile and a musty smell.
A failed shower pan, a cracked drain or a split supply line can leak into the wall or subfloor for months. The EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours, but a hidden leak is wet by definition.
| Sign | Surface mold | Leak behind the wall |
|---|---|---|
| Returns after cleaning. | Slowly, with humidity. | Quickly, within weeks. |
| Tile or grout. | Intact. | Loose or cracked. |
| Wall behind the shower. | Firm. | Soft or spongy. |
| Ceiling below. | Clear. | Stained. |
| Water bill. | Normal. | Higher than usual. |
Insurance and slow shower leaks
The Washington insurance commissioner lists damage that develops over more than a couple of days and gradual leaks that continue for long among the things most policies do not cover. A slow shower pan leak can fall into that group.
A sudden break is treated differently. Report a sudden loss quickly and follow your insurer's directions. If you are unsure, say what you know on the call.
Preventing shower mold
- Run the exhaust fan during and for 20 to 30 minutes after a shower.
- Squeegee the walls and door after use.
- Keep the shower curtain spread out so it dries.
- Clean with detergent weekly to remove soap film.
- Fix dripping fixtures and failing caulk promptly.
- Make sure the fan vents outdoors, not into the attic.
When to call a professional
If the mold has spread to drywall, the subfloor or the ceiling below, or if tile is loose, the damage is inside the wall. Water damage repair starts with opening the area, drying it and rebuilding. If mold is widespread, mold remediation uses containment and filtration so spores do not spread.
Shower products and what they do
Cleaning sprays, mold removers and grout sealers fill a store aisle. Detergent and a stiff brush do most of the work on tile and grout. Sealers slow absorption but do not fix a wet wall. Anti-mold paints for the bathroom ceiling can help once the surface is clean and dry.
None of these replaces ventilation. A fan that moves enough air and runs long enough removes the moisture that all the products are fighting.
Checking your exhaust fan
- Hold a single square of toilet paper up to the fan. If it does not stick, the fan is weak.
- Look at where the duct exits. It should go outdoors, not into the attic.
- Clean the fan cover and blades once a year.
- Run the fan during every shower and for 20 to 30 minutes afterward.
- Install a timer or humidity-sensing switch if you forget.
- Leave the door open afterward so moist air can leave the room.
A bathroom fan that moves air properly can cut mold growth more than any cleaner. Replacing an old fan is a small repair with a long payoff.
When the shower wall is wet
A hidden shower leak needs drying first, described under water mitigation, then mold remediation if growth has spread.

Common questions
Detergent and water with scrubbing removes mold from tile, grout and caulk. Do not mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. If the mold returns, look for a leak.
Either humidity is too high or there is a hidden leak. Better ventilation and replacing failed caulk fix most cases.
Color does not tell you much. Clean and dry it. For health concerns, consult your physician.
Bothell water hardness figures are not published on the city's water pages, so test your tap or ask your water utility. Mineral deposits and soap scum can feed mold either way.
