How carpet gets moldy after water damage
Carpet is a sponge sitting on another sponge. The fibers hold water, the backing holds water, and the pad underneath holds the most. Once wet, a carpet system can stay damp for days while the surface feels fine.
Mold needs moisture, a food source and time. Carpet and pad supply the food, the leak supplies the moisture, and the hours that pass supply the time.
The 24 to 48 hour rule
The EPA says to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. The Washington Department of Health gives the same window for carpets, clothing, bedding and upholstered furniture. That window is the reason speed beats everything else in a carpet flood.
If carpet has stayed wet longer, the EPA says to assume mold growth. At that point the question is not whether to throw it out but how to do it safely.
Signs of mold in wet carpet
- A musty or earthy smell that gets stronger when you step on the carpet.
- Dark, green, white or gray spots on the carpet surface, backing or tack strip.
- Staining on the baseboards or the lower drywall near the wet area.
- Carpet that feels damp days after the water stopped.
- Ripples or lifting where the pad has soaked and the backing has loosened.
Wet carpet right now?
Call the 24/7 line. Fast extraction is what protects the pad and the subfloor.
Save it or throw it out?
| Water type | Carpet | Pad |
|---|---|---|
| Clean water from a supply line, dried in 24 to 48 hours. | Often can be saved. | Usually replaced. |
| Clean water, wet for several days. | Treat as moldy. | Replace. |
| Gray water such as a washing machine overflow. | Usually replaced. | Replace. |
| Sewage or flood water. | Replace. | Replace. |
Public Health Seattle and King County advises throwing out wall-to-wall carpet and padding that has been saturated by flood waters. Sewage and flood water carry contaminants that cannot be cleaned out of carpet.
What to do before help arrives
Stop the source
Shut off the water. If it is a sewer backup, stop using the drains.
Pull furniture off the carpet
Foil or plastic under legs keeps rust and stain from spreading.
Extract what you can
A wet vacuum pulls water from the fibers. Work slowly and empty the tank often.
Run air
Open windows if it is dry outside and use fans. Do not use a central air system if the water is dirty.
Get the pad checked
Lift a corner and feel the pad. If it is soaked, it should come out.
Cleaning moldy carpet: when it is a DIY job
The Washington Department of Health defines a small mold area as less than about ten square feet, or a patch three feet by three feet. Public Health Seattle and King County suggests wearing an N-95 mask, gloves and goggles for small cleanups, and getting professional help if the growth covers more than ten square feet.
Carpet is hard to clean once mold is in the backing. Surface cleaning rarely reaches the pad or the subfloor. In most cases the carpet and pad are removed, and the subfloor is cleaned and dried.
What professionals do differently
A crew removes the carpet and pad in sections, bags them where they lie to limit spread and cleans the tack strip and subfloor. Air movers and dehumidifiers dry the room, and moisture readings confirm the subfloor is dry before any new carpet goes in.
When mold has grown beyond a small area, that work becomes mold remediation, which includes containment and removal of affected material. Ask the crew to explain the scope before they start. Take health questions to your physician.
Why the subfloor matters as much as the carpet
A new carpet over a damp subfloor repeats the problem. Plywood and oriented strand board soak up water, and concrete slabs hold moisture that rises through them. Before replacement, the subfloor should read dry on a moisture meter and smell clean.
If the subfloor shows staining, swelling or surface growth, it may need cleaning, sanding or sealing before the new pad goes down. A water damage cleanup crew can scope that step.
Keeping carpet dry in a wet climate
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear so rain stays away from exterior walls.
- Use a dehumidifier in basements and ground-floor rooms during the rainy months.
- Fix sticking doors and windows that let rain blow in.
- Check carpet edges along exterior walls and under windows after heavy storms.
- Clean up pet accidents and spills fast, because slow moisture feeds the same problem.
If the carpet needs to come out
Carpet removal and subfloor cleaning fall under water damage cleanup. Growth beyond a small area belongs to mold remediation.
The same crews serve Bothell and also work in Lynnwood and Kirkland.
The published ANSI/IICRC S500 and S520 standards are the industry references for wet carpet and mold work. They are cited as standards, not as certifications.
Common questions
The EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. After that, assume mold may be present.
Bleach does not penetrate the backing or the pad, and mixing cleaners can be dangerous. If the carpet has been wet for days, it is usually removed. Public Health Seattle and King County recommends professional help when growth exceeds ten square feet.
Not always, but a musty smell means moisture is present. Check the pad and subfloor and dry the area.
Fall and winter rain bring wet carpets from door leaks, window leaks and basement seepage. Ground-level carpet near exterior walls is the usual casualty.
